Our furry pals need love too! Try making healthy homemade peanut butter dog treats. 5 simple ingredients: flour, quick oats, peanut butter, Musselman’s Unsweetened Apple Sauce, and baking powder.
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350° F and cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 2
In a medium bowl, combine all ingredints and 1 cup of the apple sauce.
Step 3
Knead dough on a lightly floured surface. If the dough is too loose and crumbly add more apple sauce to hold it together (up to 1/2 cup).
Step 4
Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch think. use cookie cutters to cut dough into shapes. You can also just roll dough into 1 inch balls.
Step 5
Place cookies on the parchment 1/2 inch apart. Bake for 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
Step 6
Let cookies cool completely and then store in an airtight container.
Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in some foods, is toxic and potentially fatal to dogs.
This sounds yummy and I’m going to make it for my pups! Please, can you update your recipe to note that the peanut butter must not contain xylitol, which is toxic and potentially fatal to dogs?
Thanks for the information. We added a note. 👍
My dog absolutely loves these treats! He now turns up his nose when I give him a Milkbone.
How long are these treats suppose to last?
While the flour, oats, and peanut butter are stable at room temp for many weeks, the apple sauce will add water to the cookies so they may eventually mold. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
I made Halloween shaped ones for my little monsters, and for my neighbors 3 dogs as well. You must be kidding….lasts 3 weeks….more like 3 days with these 5! (I know shelf life) Thanks!
Glad your furry friends enjoyed them 🙂
Can these treat be frozen for longer life?
Absolutely you can freeze them but they may stick together. We’d recommend laying them on a sheet pan in the freezer first, then once frozen place in a sealed container/ bag for future use. You can also freeze between layers of wax paper.
Love the recipes and my babies 2 pugs and 2 kittys. They give a paw up for the treats. Thank You
